Where the (blue) lines overlap…

Recently me and the evil twin have been watching the Winter Olympics. Two of our favourite sports to watch are Snowboard Cross and Alpine Downhill. It's great fun watching the skiers and snowboarders race down the course. But, the evil twin was wondering what are the blue lines for (I think she's planning to go there and spray graffiti all over the course to 'confuse' the athletes...)

The blue lines, made from blue dye, are there to help the athletes judge the distances and angles for their turns and their ‘line’ down the course. Sometimes they’ll plan to turn before the blue line on certain corners, or on, or just after on others. They don’t have to stay between the lines but must pass through each gate.

So, yes, let’s hope the evil twin doesn’t go through with her plans (falling off at 120+ km/h can’t be fun!) – and did you know that blue dye is used instead of red dye – which would offer greater contrast- because the red dye would look like blood on the snow; something you really don’t want to think about before hurling yourself at breakneck speeds down an icy mountain!
